What Is Backflow Prevention?

Backflow prevention is the practice of ensuring that non-potable water or other substances do not flow back into the potable water supply. Backflow can occur when there is a drop in water pressure, causing water or other substances to flow back into the water supply system from a source that is not intended to be connected to it.

Backflow prevention measures typically involve the installation of backflow prevention devices and valves, which prevent this reverse flow of water.

Do I Need A Backflow Preventer For My Water System?

Backflow Prevention Valve

Yes, in the UK, backflow prevention is a legal requirement. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Scottish Water Byelaws set out the legal requirements for backflow prevention and the prevention of contamination of the public water supply.

These regulations also state that backflow prevention devices and valves should be installed where there is a risk of contamination. For example, in facilities which use chemicals, irrigation systems, and fire suppression systems.

How Often Do Backflow Prevention Devices Need Testing?

In general, backflow prevention devices should be tested at least once a year by a competent individual. UK regulations also require that records of the testing need to be kept for a minimum of five years.

As the frequency of device testing can vary, it's best to consult with a team of professionals like Titan Mechanical Services who can personally inspect your systems backflow measures. Discover our renowned RPZ testing today!
