What Are My Legal Responsibilities Under ACOP L8

ACOP L8 (Fourth edition) is the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice titled Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems. It sets the expectations for duty holders and is supported by HSG274 technical guidance. Under ACOP L8, duty holders such as employers, landlords, and building managers must control the risk of Legionella bacteria in water systems. This includes identifying and assessing sources of risk, implementing and maintaining effective control measures, and keeping accurate records.

 

You must appoint a competent person (the “responsible person”) to manage these duties, ensure regular monitoring, cleaning, and disinfection of water systems, and take swift corrective action when needed. Compliance with ACOP L8 helps meet legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and COSHH Regulations.
