Why Replace, When You Can Reline.
More Sustainable, Cheaper & Guaranteed For 10 Years!

Your Trusted Partner for GRP Water Tank Relining

If you’re here, there’s a good chance your water tank is leaking, corroded, or no longer meeting compliance standards.

Engineers in water tank

Well, you've come to the right place. At Titan Water, we specialise in the lining and refurbishment of all types of water tanks. We understand the different ways each type of tank fails over time, and we have the products and expertise to bring them back to life.

Our approach is practical and considered. We won’t recommend relining if it isn’t the right fix, but when it is, we know how to do it properly - with the right prep, the right coatings, and a focus on long-term reliability.

Nationwide Service
Reliable Expertise Wherever You Are

Our experienced management team operate from the Titan head office near Liverpool, but while our roots are firmly in the North West, our reach goes far beyond it. â€‹Our team deliver tank relining projects across the whole of the UK, through our experienced network of regional project teams. Whether it's a hospital basement in Glasgow, a school in the Midlands, or a commercial site tucked away in rural Cornwall, we’ve been there - and we’ve solved the same kinds of problems you’re likely facing now.

If you’re unsure what shape your tank is in, or you just want some honest advice, then the engineering team here at Titan are happy to help.

What Is GRP Tank Relining?

GRP tank relining is the process of rehabilitating an existing glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) water tank by applying a new internal lining (often a flexible polyurethane) to restore its watertight integrity and extend service life. Unlike a full tank replacement, relining works within the original structure, so you avoid dismantling, removal costs, and extensive downtime.

Key distinctions:

  • Cost efficiency: Relining is generally less expensive than full replacement because you reuse the existing shell.

  • Reduced downtime: The relining process is quicker, so your system can return to service faster.

  • Sustainability: Relining reduces waste and avoids scrapping the original tank.

  • Limitations: If a tank has severe structural damage (major cracks, failed supports, warped panels), relining may not be viable and replacement is required.

When considering GRP tank relining vs replacement, one should always start with a structural assessment and a full survey to check if the existing tank is still sound enough to accept a new lining.

How long does a GRP tank reline last?

The lifespan of a relined GRP tank depends heavily on the quality of the preparation, materials used, operational conditions, and ongoing maintenance. A professionally applied, WRAS-approved, solvent-free polyurethane can last 10 to 20 years or more under favourable conditions.

Factors that influence longevity include:

  • Surface preparation: Proper cleaning, abrasion, and defect repairs before applying the new lining are critical to adhesion and durability.

  • Quality of lining material: Flexible, corrosion- and chemical-resistant linings designed for GRP structures (like polyurethanes) perform better over time.

  • Operational stresses: Fluctuations in water chemistry, temperature changes, or abrasive particulates can accelerate wear.

  • Maintenance regime: Regular inspections, cleaning, and touch-up repairs will prolong life.

In practice, many contractors offer 10-year guarantees on relining work, sometimes extendable with maintenance contracts. That guarantee is a useful benchmark for expected performance under normal service conditions.

What is involved in the GRP tank relining process, and how long does it typically take??

The GRP tank relining process is methodical and comprises several key stages. The time required varies with tank size, complexity, access, and condition, but many relines can be completed in days rather than weeks. Here’s a typical workflow:

  1. Site survey & specification: Inspect the tank, measure dimensions, identify defects.

  2. Temporary tank or bypass (if required): Provide alternative water supply during works.

  3. Drain & cleaning: Remove existing contents, sludge, scale, or biological growth.

  4. Surface preparation: Light abrasion, defect repairs, profiling - ensuring a clean, stable substrate.

  5. Stripe coat / edge sealing: Pre-treat joints, bolts, corners, penetrations.

  6. Coating application: Apply first coat (e.g. ~500 µm wet film thickness), allow to cure, then apply second coat for full coverage.

  7. Curing & inspection: Let coating fully cure, perform visual inspection and adhesion tests.

  8. Refill, disinfect, & commissioning: Clean water system, disinfect per standards, and bring tank back into service.

For many commercial GRP tanks, the process can be completed in 2 to 7 days, depending on access, complexity, and curing conditions. Having a skilled contractor plan the works carefully (including weather, access and health & safety) helps minimise disruption.
